When Family Gathers, Food Becomes Secondary

Name of Establishment: Harana and Sarung Banggi

Location: F. Torres Street

Specialty: Filipino food

Some restaurants are just places to eat.

And then there are places like Harana.

Harana on F. Torres Street has been part of Davao City’s story since 1979, which means it has outlasted trends, survived the city’s rapid growth, and watched F. Torres transform from a dark, kangkong-lined road into Davao’s most recognizable food street.

Before any of that happened, Harana was already feeding families. It started in 1966 as a small nipa hut setup in a garden in Matina, a few bamboo tables, rattan chairs, a barbecue pit under a mango tree, and a recipe for fried chicken and spare ribs from Mrs. Rosario Abella Lizada that people are still coming back for decades later.

That kind of longevity means generations of Davaoeños have marked their milestones here. Birthdays, reunions, anniversaries, the big moments that need a table large enough to hold everyone.

We were there for Tita Lyn’s 80th.

Margaux’s aunt has always been kind to me, genuinely and consistently kind through the years..

Turning 80 deserves to be celebrated properly with friends, family, and a room full of people who love you.

She got all that and even got a bouquet made entirely of one thousand peso bills folded into flowers. Eighty thousand pesos worth of appreciation handed to a woman who has clearly spent a lifetime earning it.

The food was a mixed bag, honestly.

The lechon wasn’t as crispy as I’d hoped, which is always a slight disappointment when lechon is on the table.

The lasagna, though, was genuinely good.

And the fruit salad… I made the mistake of being polite early on and waiting for others. By the end of the party, Davao’s heat almost spoiled the fruit salad and I ended up eating most of what was left as quickly as possible.

Here’s the thing about family gatherings, though.

The food matters less than you think it will.

What you remember isn’t whether the lechon was crispy.

You remember Tita Lyn’s face when they handed her that bouquet.

You remember the laughter across the table.

You remember being in a room full of people held together by love for one woman who turned 80 and deserved every single moment of it.

Harana has hosted thousands of moments like that. Families with their complications and their histories and their quiet rifts showing up anyway, sitting down together, sharing a meal.

That’s what restaurants like this are really for.

Happy 80th, Tita Lyn.

Parking is a bit of a puzzle. There’s an empty lot nearby that does the job, but it’s not exactly convenient. A small complaint for a place that has been feeding this city for nearly sixty years.

Oh and if you want a more detailed history of the place, check out the Traveling Nomad’s article from way back.

I was also testing the Modofo H91 Action Camera and here’s the footage I got. Please take note that I was stil trying out the equipment.
